UCOL Nursing Communication Update

Thank you for your patience with applications and enquiries regarding the Bachelor of Nursing for Registered Nurses pathway at UCOL. We apologise for taking a while to respond to you, we have been concentrating on making sure all our Bachelor of Nursing for Registered Nurses students are fully supported given the mounting uncertainty raised recently with some applications to the Nursing Council in New Zealand being declined, and a consultation document released which could make it more difficult for Internationally Qualified Nurses seeking registration in New Zealand in the future. We have also been cooperating fully with a review by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority on this matter and have had positive discussions with the Nursing Council to ensure all students are treated fairly.

We are now in a position to confirm that enrolments into the current Bachelor of Nursing for Registered Nurses pathway have closed. The last cohort of these students started in May 2012. 79% of graduates in this pathway over the last five years have gained Nursing Council registration (that’s 128 graduates from a total of 162). We are very proud of these students and our staff who have taught them. Those students who have not succeeded in gaining Nursing Council registration will have many reasons for not having completed certification such as, (a) Still working towards gaining English language levels of competency (b) returning to country of origin for personal reasons, (c) working in health or related areas whereby certification is not mandatory.

UCOL is offering a special September cohort for internationally qualified nurses into its full Bachelor of Nursing Programme. Places are limited.

We have also been in contact with Immigration NZ advising them that UCOL is offering a Bachelor of Nursing cohort for internationally qualified nurses in September 2012.Applicants will apply for the full three year programme and undergo individual RPL assessment. Some of these applicants may be some of your students and you should make contact with UCOL admissions identifying your clients details should they want to be considered for September (if you have not already done so) so that we can notify INZ relevant details. Those applicants who may have already applied for a visa for the Registered Nurse pathway in September which is now closed, but wish to enrol now in the full Bachelor of Nursing programme will have some priority but need to act quickly.

Internationally Qualified Nurses applying for the Bachelor of Nursing may apply for individual Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). All RPL applications should be made at the time of enrolling. Applicants will need to provide academic transcripts and evidence of what they have done. Achieving credits through RPL will enable applicants to complete the BN more quickly.

UCOL is developing a new one year Level 7 qualification for internationally qualified nurses which will lead to Registration in New Zealand, subject to receiving approval and accreditation. This work is well underway and should be available for students from May 2013. We will keep you updated on our progress.

UCOL’s Dean of Health Science Penny O’Leary and I will be travelling to India in August/September and will be able to brief agencies on developments in the proposed new level 7 Qualification.

Your continuing support of UCOL is most appreciated and in return we are very confident that we will be able to offer to your prospective clients by early 2013 a wider range of Nursing programme pathways that will lead to Nursing Council registration in New Zealand.
